Summary
In this presentation Dr. Ferdinand presents data from the ARIES (African American Rosuvastatin Investigation of Efficacy and Safety) Trial.
ARIES is the largest prospective trial to date comparing lipid-modifying treatments in African Americans. Over 700 hypercholesterolemic patients were randomized to treatment with rosuvastatin 10mg or 20mg, or atorvastatin 10mg or 20mg.
After 6 weeks of treatment, it was found that rosuvastatin had superior efficacy compared to atorvastatin on a mg-equivalent basis in this population, in terms of reducing LDL-, TC and non-HDL cholesterol. Decreased median CRP levels were also seen with rosuvastatin 20mg and atorvastatin 20mg. Rosuvastatin was well-tolerated and had a similar safety profile to that of atorvastatin.
Dr. Ferdinand reviews these 6 week data from ARIES as they were presented at the AHA meeting of November 2004 in New Orleans.
