Dr. Göran K. Hansson
Göran K Hansson is Professor of Cardiovascular Research at the Karolinska Institute and head of the Cardiovascular Research Laboratory of the Center for Molecular Medicine at Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm, Sweden. He is also the chairman of the Nobel Committee for physiology or medicine, has been chairman of the European Vascular Biology Association, is the European editor for Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology, and a consulting editor for the Journal of Clinical Investigation.
Dr Hansson holds an MD and PhD from Gothenburg University, Sweden, has worked clinically in internal medicine and laboratory medicine, was a Fogarty postdoctoral fellow at the University of Washington in Seattle, a senior scientist with the Swedish Medical Research Council, and a professor of cell biology at Gothenburg University before he joined Karolinska Institute in 1995.
Dr Hansson´s research deals with immune and inflammatory mechanisms in atherosclerosis. In 1985, he discovered that atherosclerotic plaques contain activated T cells and cytokines. His work has also shown that oxidized LDL is a T cell antigen, that immune cytokines activate vascular cells, and that the Th1 pathway is activated in atherosclerosis. His current work deals with proatherogenic and atheroprotective immunity, vascular inflammation, and myocardial infarction. His research has been recognized by several awards and honours, including the Fernström prize (1992), Werkö prize (1998), Russell Ross memorial lecture (2000), Nikkilä lecture (2002), Eijkman medal (2003) and the Vulnerable plaque lifetime achievement award (2003).
